"The Cherry Tree" is a touching story about a young boy named Rakesh and his deep bond with nature. Rakesh lives with his grandfather on the outskirts of Mussoorie so that he can attend school, while his parents work on their terraced farm in a nearby village. One day, on his walk home from school, Rakesh buys a bunch of cherries. After eating them, his grandfather advises him to plant the last seed so that it can be put to good use. Rakesh presses the seed into the soft earth in a quiet corner of the garden and soon forgets about it.
The following spring, Rakesh is thrilled to find a tiny green shoot rising from the soil. Grandfather tells him to look after it, so Rakesh waters it gently and arranges a ring of pebbles around it for protection. However, the young sapling faces several hardships. First, a goat wanders into the garden and eats all its leaves. Later, a woman accidentally cuts the plant in half with a sharp scythe while cutting grass. In spite of these severe damages, the sturdy cherry tree refuses to die and continues to send out fresh green shoots.
As the years pass, Rakesh grows older and stronger, and the tree grows alongside him. It braves cold winter snows and provides shelter to many creatures, including a praying mantis, caterpillars, bees, and colourful birds. When Rakesh turns nine, the tree produces its first pale pink blossoms, followed by small cherries that the birds enjoy feasting upon.
One evening, while relaxing beneath its pleasant shade with his grandfather, Rakesh marvels at the magnificent tree. He realizes how special it is because they planted it with their own hands. Touching its smooth bark and green leaves, Rakesh feels an immense sense of joy and wonder at having nurtured a tiny seed into a living miracle.
